The short answer would be: you need to know how to do everything described in a contract or job proposal. The long answer (which is ironically shorter than the short answer) would be: everything under the sun.

There’s some comfort in knowing that almost all freelancers do a little learning on the job. It’s inevitable, in fact.

Good answer.  if you’re not learning - you’re not paying attention so agreed, you’ll learn on the job.  in fact - no matter how experienced you get you’ll keep learning on the job. :)  As long as you can do what you say you can and get the job done you promised - you can freelance.  no need to be an expert in ASP if your contract is for a static 5 page HTML site.

Good luck !!!

They have GOT to start adding a limit to the number of posts before a link can be added.

I haven’t been for a while, but with all the terrible websites out there, there is really no shortage for re-designing poorly constructed sites. I figure I could make a pretty good side business doing this….but like more things it is about drive and ambition and getting off my ass instead of playing WOW ;-)

I have thought about marketing poorly designed websites or non-CSS sites by telling them them are no longer “up to the current standards of the web” (whatever that might be). More specifically I was going to have a combined service of redesigning sites to strict CSS and SEO services (including keyword research/and basic onsite optimization). Now to come up with a pricing scheme…:-)

I was freelancing for 5 years before I even considered going full time with it, but I think thats because I didn’t realize I was capable of running my own business. :-P
