Images or Web Fonts?

Just wanted to get some feedback regarding the use of web fonts rather than images.

I create ecommerce sites and would love to replace some banner images with cool web fonts for SEO purposes.

I have been contemplating introducing web fonts on some sites however wanted to know if anyone here has done this yet and what their experiences were.

Do you think I should take the plunge and start using web fonts?
Have many of you used web fonts on projects?
Which web font service would you recommend etc…

Looking forward to getting some feedback.

Thanks for the feedback!

I actually came across some great info over the weekend - Google Web Font!

This seems to be a free alternative.

I’ll try it out and keep you all posted.

If you’ve already used Google web font API please let me know how you got on.

Hi buddy ,

From this thread  you can find the list with the standard set of fonts common to all versions of Windows and their Mac substitutes, referred sometimes as “browser safe fonts”.

This is the reference I use when making web pages and I expect you will find it useful too.

Manish

Hi seowork1,

Many thanks for your reply and link.

The main objective for creating this post was to highlight and discuss the possibilities of moving away form the common web “browser safe fonts”.
Googe have released.

The Google Font Directory lets you browse all the fonts available via the Google Font API.
All fonts in the directory are available for use on your website under an open source license and are served by Google servers.

I am going to implement this into my site but it probably won’t be live for a few more weeks (Currently swamped with work)
As soon as its LIVE - I’ll post a link and the instructions of how to add it to you sites.

Hi sarasmile,

Thanks for the great link!
I might include one of these on my site.

Still really like the Raleway (by Matt McInerney) available in Google web fonts ;)

Dafont and Typophile are usually big winners for me whenever I’ve looking for fonts. Great selection and most of them are done by up and coming typographers!

Yes, I agree HOWEVER I am hoping to find FREE alternatives.
They seem to be quite expensive especially when Google is offering free fonts.
I admit their current selection of fonts is very limited but hopefully more will be added soon.

P.S. My new site will be finished nex week so I’ll place some links here to get some “constructive” feedback :-)

Is there no way to attach fonts to your CSS? If not then if you want to use a fancy font then you basically have to use images.

Hi charmainelepine,

Thanks for your reply.
It is possible to use fancy fonts on a website without using images.
I am currently updating my site to include this.
Thought it would have been finsihed this week but to be honest I think I will be the end of next week before I am able to post it.

I’ll also upload all scripts that were used in case anyone else wishes to implement the same.

Hi Dr_Build,

I’d like to see that, I’ve not looked into it before to be honest, but i suppose it would speed up your web site and make it more SEO friendly. With the new CSS3 features it could be just as polished too. hmmm let me know when its ready for a preview and i’ll check it out.

Thanks,

Unfortunately for designers who so love Photoshop to create print materials, the Web is not print. When transitioning to the web, graphic designers face a set of common problems
